چکیده

This paper examines the effectiveness of racialized Get-Out-The-Vote (GOTV) messages at mobilizing black voters. Here we use a mail-based voter mobilization experiment containing 134,000 black registered voters conducted during 2008 North Carolina Democratic Presidential primary to test two different explanations for how racialized voter mobilization messages might increase black voter turnout (in the context of a campaign featuring a viable black presidential candidate). The first test examines the effectiveness of GOTV messages that prime simple in-group norms of voting (i.e., other blacks vote or don’t) at increasing black voter turnout. The second test examines the effectiveness of GOTV messages that highlight black advantage/disadvantage in black/white electoral competition (i.e., blacks turnout at higher rates than white or vice versa). While we find little evidence that priming in-group norms of voting has any effect on black turnout, we do however find that racial group conflict messages highlighting black disadvantage in political competition with whites had the unsettling effect of demobilizing black voters.

When Race Matters and When It Doesn’t: Racial Group Differences in Response to Racial Cues

Building on previous research on the effects of racial priming on the opinions of White Americans, this paper engages the question of how exposure to racial cues in political messages shapes the opinions of African Americans. I argue that explanations of racial priming that focus exclusively on White Americans are insufficient to explain how racial cues influence the opinions of Black Americans...

Quarterly Rene R . Rocha and Tetsuya Matsubayashi The Politics of Race and Voter ID Laws in the States : The Return of Jim Crow ?

Does partisan and racial context have an effect on the likelihood that states will adopt stringent requirements for voting? Our duration analysis shows that Republican governments increase the likelihood that a new law requiring citizens to have a photo ID to vote will be passed. This effect is weakened by minority group size. We then examine whether the adoption of voter ID regulations affects...

Racial Differences in Self-Reported and Validated Turnout in the 1988 Presidential Election

Our previous analyses of the 1964, 1976, 1978, 1980, 1984, and 1986 vote validation studies questioned the conclusion that low levels of electoral participation by blacks result solely from racial differences in socioeconomic status and because blacks are more likely than whites to live in the South. The 1988 NES vote validation study is used to update our findings, and the results are consiste...

Descriptive Social Norms and Motivation to Vote: Everybody's Voting and so Should You

The fact that many citizens fail to vote is often cited to motivate others to vote. Psychological research on descriptive social norms suggests that emphasizing the opposite—that many do vote—would be a more effective message. In two get-out-the-vote field experiments, we find that messages emphasizing low expected turnout are less effective at motivating voters than messages emphasizing high e...

Black Candidates and Black Turnout: A Study of Mayoral Elections in Louisiana∗

What effect does candidate race have on co-racial voter turnout? Recent studies suggest that the presence of a black candidate results in an increase in black turnout. We argue that much of these findings can be attributed to the different design choices of previous researchers, and absence of attention paid to strategic candidate behavior. In this study we examine mayoral elections in the stat...
